Disguised as rejection
I got another acceptance for a poem today! And the best thing about it was I was sure the letter was a rejection. Rejections are always fat envelopes, all your poems stuffed back inside on their way home (with the little quarter sheet rejection note). And they always use your self-addressed stamped envelope. A number of my acceptances have also used the SASE, but they’ve all been really skinny—just the one page saying they want this or that poem. I took that envelope out of my box today and just groaned, because it was a journal I thought I’d had a good shot at publishing in. And it turns out I did! Made my day.
